Hospital’s diabetes expo to feature nationally known speaker

Will Cross, a well-known adventurer and motivational speaker who is diabetic, will be the guest speaker at a free diabetes expo sponsored by Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center.

The expo is scheduled Oct. 1, from 2 to 5 p.m., with the speaker from 5 to 6 p.m., in the pre-function area of the Medical Education Auditorium on the lower level of Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center, 1000 Harrington Blvd., in Mount Clemens.

Cross’ appearance is sponsored by Novo Nordisk, a provider of diabetic care products.

In addition to the speaker, the expo will feature vendor exhibits with the latest information about new products and medications for diabetics.

Among his many expeditions, Cross has walked to the North and South poles, and climbed the highest peaks on seven continents. While his accomplishments would be a challenge for anyone, he also has Type 1 diabetes. In addition to mountain climbing, Cross gives motivational speeches about living with diabetes and pursuing your goals.

The former educator and father of six is among 23.6 million children and adults in the United States who have diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, 17.9 million have been diagnosed with diabetes, but 5.7 million people are unaware that they have the disease.

“We are pleased to have Will Cross as a speaker,” said Chandan Gupte, manager of Nutritional Counseling and the Diabetes Program at Mount Clemens Regional. “We hope he will help motivate our community of patients, and show them that having diabetes doesn’t have to hold them back from physical activity and achieving their goals.”
