Diabetes Education Program Offered

Now, persons with diabetes in the Rockbridge area can learn how to better manage and control their disease through Carilion Stonewall Jackson Hospital’s diabetes education program.

Presented by a team of health professionals specializing in diabetes, this five-week program covers all aspects of diabetes and the latest details available on its proper care including blood glucose monitoring, exercise, hyper- and hypoglycemia, care of feet, eyes and skin, nutrition including meal planning, carbohydrate counting and portion control, complications of diabetes, medications – oral agents and insulin, managing your stress and changing your behaviors.

At present there are almost 22 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the United States with another 6.2 million undiagnosed. Another 41 million people have pre-diabetes and will eventually become diabetic.

If you’re one of the millions of Americans living with diabetes, you know the importance of managing and controlling your condition. Research shows that people with diabetes who are educated on disease management reduce their risk of diabetes-related complications.

The next series of classes will begin Thursday, September 4 at 7 p.m. in the conference rooms on ground floor of the hospital. There is no cost for attending the class, but space is limited so registration is required.

Diabetes is a life-long disease that can cause serious complications. It is extremely important for everyone to have an understanding of this disease and to recognize the implications of uncontrolled diabetes.
