SHREYA LIFE SCIENCES INDIA TO INTRODUCE ORAL INSULIN SPRAY

Bio-pharma firm Shreya Life Sciences India On Friday said it will introduce human insulin 'Oral Recosulin', which can be delivered through the inner lining of the mouth, in the domestic market soon.

The company is waiting for the approval of the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority for marketing the drug in the Indian market, Shreya Life Sciences Director (Domestic Business) Ram Shelat told reporters here.

"The drug is in the fourth phase and is expected to be available in the market in the next two weeks," he said.

The drug has been developed by US-based Generex Biotechnology Corporation. Shreya has entered into a product licensing and distribution agreement with Generex to market the product in India.

The company will make the drug available for about Rs 2,200 (US$44) for a pack of two vials, he said.

The new product will contribute about five to seven per cent to the company's revenues. "Our diabetes product line forms about five per cent to our revenues. An additional five to seven per cent will be contributed by Oral Recosulin," Shelat said.

The company is targeting sales of more than 1,000 packs in the first six months.

The total market size of diabetic drugs is about Rs 17.22 billion, of which insulin comprises Rs 5.14 billion.
