A road race to help diabetes research attracted 125 runners and walkers Saturday morning at the Capitol grounds.
Will Rawson of Birmingham took top honors in the male division of the 5k race while Australian native Christina Vanderhulst captured the women's division title.
Race coordinator Allison Strickler said $35,000 was raised in the inaugural event with proceeds going to help with diabetes research. Some of the runners have been battling diabetes for several years.
State Rep. Ken Guin, D-Carbon Hill, watched from the sidelines. He is determined to lose enough weight to either eliminate or reduce the effects of diabetes.
"I'm down from 218 to 196 and want to drop to 180," he said as he watched the runners finish. "I'd really like to hit 170 if at all possible."
