Walk Helps Raise Money to Fight Juvenile Diabetes

People put on their walking shoes in Charleston Sunday to help children with juvenile diabetes.

The Juvenile Diabetes Research Association hosts the walk every year to raise money for research.

Most of the money the group raises goes directly toward that mission.

For young people who live every day with diabetes it is a positive cause and a worthwhile way to spend their weekend.

"They've already almost finished an artificial pancreas," explained Jay Haapala, who has juvenile diabetes. "It is an insulin pump that you wear that communicates with a computer and it will give you insulin take it away. That's the closest thing to a cure for now ."

The group also helps children affected by the disease through support groups and other efforts.
